Atal Bihari Vajpayee, The Story of 13 days Prime Minister of Republic of India

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior. His grandfather, Pandit Shyam Lal Vajpayee had moved to Morena, Gwalior from his tribal town of Bateshwar, Uttar Pradesh. His dad Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, was an artist and a schoolmaster in the place where he grew up. Vajpayee did his schooling from the Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Gorkhi, Gwalior. Vajpayee went to Gwalior’s Victoria School (now Laxmi Bai School) and graduated with unique excellence in Hindi, English and Sanskrit. He finished his post-graduation with a M.A. in Political Science from DAV School, Kanpur, and was granted a top notch degree.He remained unmarried throughout his life and adopted Namita daughter of BN Kaul.Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a well known for his poetry.

  • In the year 1942, during the quit India movement Atal Bihari Vajpayee was arrested for his involvement. He choose to join BJS bharathiya Jana sangh in the year 1951.His great move towards political career.
  • In 1957,he was elected as Loksabha member from Balrampur and for his skills exhibited,he received appreciation from Jawaharlal Nehru. He never backed off since then,next he was elected as Rajya sabha member in 1962,and then as the national president of BJS in 1968 and led BJS to national prominence. He was then arrested for 2 years 1975-77 during the emergency declared by Indira Gandhi.
  • In 1977 general elections,he became foreign exchange minister and was the first person to deliver speech at united nations general assembly. By 1979,he created his own trademark as a well known politician in the political history.
  • In 1980, after a split in the Janata party, Vajpayee helped the BJS to redesign itself as the BJP. In 1980,he himself with his longtime friends L.K.adwani and Bhairon Singh, restarted BJS as BJP and became the first president of BJP.
  • In 1992 he was one of only a handful couple of Hindu pioneers to take a stand in opposition to the pulverization of the noteworthy mosque at Ayodhya by hostile to Muslim fanatics. Vajpayee served thrice as the prime minister of India from 1996 and 2004.
  • In the year 1996,BJP won the elections and Vajpayee became the 10th prime minister of India.As he did not receive enough support from the other parties he resigned after 13days of his ministry. In 1998,his second term as prime minister begins and he held pokhran nuclear tests.His second prime minister post lasts only for 13 months as the government collapsed.
  • In 1999,he saved many people from filght highjack by exchanging Afghanistan terrorists in the air..And started the first ever Delhi-Lahore bus service. And the mission Vijay to clear Kargil and main for the Kargil war.
  • In 1999,BJP won 303 seats outs of 543 in Loksabha and Vajpayee became the prime minister for third time. On October 13th 1999,he took oath as PM of India for the third time.
  • In 2001,he launched government scheme Sarva Shiksha abhiyan throughout the country. As remote clergyman in the BJP government, Vajpayee earned a notoriety for enhancing relations with Pakistan and China.
  • In 2004,BJP looses the parliamentary elections, and his term as prime minister ends.
  • In 2005 he retires from politics declaring that he would not contest in next elections. Vajpayee was referred as Bheeshma of India politics by Manmohan Singh.
  • In 2015 he was awarded with Bharata Ratna,India’s highest civilian award.
